How to propagate Bougainvillea
It is not easy to propagate bougainvillea. These are the most common methods.
Cuttings
You can try this, use softwood or semi-woody cuttings about 8 cm long, harvested in spring or summer.
Dip the base of the cuttings in rooting hormones and place them in a pot of moist but well-draining cuttings compost in a heated propagator.
It can also be propagated by hardwood cuttings in deep pots in winter with heat below between 3 to 6°C (5-10°F) above air temperature to encourage rooting. These cuttings can take three months to root.
Air layering
Air layering in mid-spring is usually the most effective. The new plants will bloom in 2 to 3 years.
Advice for buying Bougainvillea
There are many types of Bougainvillea, in different shapes and sizes and in a huge variety of colors. Make sure you choose the right bougainvillea for your space.
Buy only healthy plants. Check that the plant has healthy green leaves and that it looks the way it should for the time of year it is.
See if there are any healthy white roots coming out of the drainage holes but at the same time that they are not completely compacted in the pot.
Make sure there are no signs of pests or diseases.
